Program Curriculum

201 Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Plate

Course Description: The introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding Plate course is designed to teach students about arc welding plate safety and the Shielded Metal Arc Welding Process (SMAW) on plate, proper techniques and electrode selection for welding plate in various welding positions such as 2G, 3G, & 4G to meet the welding code standards set by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). 


Subject Hours: 120 clock hours (20 hours lec, 100 hours lab, 00 hours ext)


Performance Objectives:

  • 1. SMAW Process works.  
  • 2. Fitting of plate joints  
  • 3. Running basic weld beads.  
  • 4. Weld with 6010 electrode. 
  • 5. Weld with 7018 electrode. 
  • 6. Identify and troubleshoot welding issues. 
  • 7. Proper cleaning techniques after each weld pass. 
  • 8. Cutting using oxy-fuel torch


Prerequisites:  Admission to the program 


Required Textbooks: Pearson. NCCER Welding Level 1 Trainee Guide, 5th Edition. 2015

  • 4. Cooperative Learning 


Maximum Student to Instructor Ratio: 22:1 


Weekly Content Outline:

  • Week 1. Safety procedures, lab guidelines & overview of the SMAW process. 
  • Week 2. Introduction to fitting, prepping and cleaning materials, proper grinding techniques & running a basic weld bead.
  • Week 3. Running beads, proper cleaning techniques on welds, cutting using oxy-fuel torch, identify and troubleshoot any issues that arise. 
  • Week 4. Welding Plate in the horizontal position (2G). 
  • Week 5. Welding plate in the vertical position (3G). 
  • Week 6. Welding plate in the overhead position (4G).

Basis of Grades: Tests / Quizzes: 15%, Lab Assignments: 50%, Final Exam: 35%
