Program Curriculum

101 Introduction to Welding

Course Description: Students will learn how to properly use equipment, importance of personal protective equipment, and safety procedures for basic welding while in the shop. In addition, they will learn the fundamentals of equipment used in arc welding, including welding and cutting safety, basic arc welding processes, and basic metallurgy information. Lastly, the student will learn how to burn rods and run beads in a 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G position on a plate coupon using arc welding (SMAW). 


Subject Hours:  60 Clock hours (10 hours lec, 50 hours lab, 00 hours ext)


Performance Objective:

  • 1. Orientation to the welding process. 
  • 2. Safety in all aspects of welding, including tool usage. 
  • 3. Learning how to run a bead.  
  • 4. Learn about oxyacetylene properties and cutting safety and procedure. 
  • 5. Intro to SMAW welding


Prerequisites: Admission to the program


Required Textbooks: Pearson. NCCER Welding Level 1 Trainee Guide, 5th Edition. 2015 


Instructional Methods:

  • 1. Lecture 
  • 2. Lab 
  • 3. Demonstration 


Maximum Student to Instructor Ratio:  22:1


Weekly Content Outline:

  • Week 1. Safety procedures and lab guidelines. 
  • Week. 2 Tool Usage, setting up and prepping the work area. 
  • Week 3. Cutting using oxyacetylene and running beads and butt welds.  


Basis of Grades:  Test / Quizzes: 15%, Lab Assignments: 50%, Final Exam: 35%
